No. The language of instruction for all courses offered by Vesalius College (except for the French Literature course) is English. Furthermore, although both French and Dutch are spoken in Brussels, English is spoken by the majority of its residents and is the de facto language used by most professional organizations. Studying in Brussels is, however, a prime opportunity for students to study French or Dutch and to become immersed in the language and Belgian culture.

Since course level assignments are different for language courses in different countries, Vesalius College requires that any student wishing to register for a French or Dutch course that is not at the elementary level (no prior knowledge of the language) must take a written and oral language placement test during orientation week (week preceding the first week of classes).

Most students elect to study abroad for one semester or one year. Vesalius College also offers a seven-week Summer Programme every year. In general, today's communicative approach to teaching English requires that the teacher speak only in English. Speaking a foreign language is therefore of no particular value. Indeed, if you are teaching a class of students who have ten different mother tongues, as is not impossible, even your fluency in say three foreign languages would have little relevance. In addition, there are many English-language programs in countries where English is not the native language. (See the section on "What Is a Study Abroad Program?" for details.) Of course, there are plenty of study abroad programs that require foreign language proficiency, some to a lesser degree and some requiring near-fluency.

Going directly from high school to a university does require foreign language for most university admissions. However, if you are a "transfer student" with 30 or more college credits, you are no longer required to have a foreign language and your admissions is based on your college cumulative GPA and if required an essay, letters of recommendation and interview.
