You are selected from a list of registered voters, licensed drivers and persons with an MVA identification card. The first time you are selected you are sent a questionnaire to determine if you qualify for jury duty. You cannot serve on a jury in Baltimore City if you are not a resident of Baltimore City, have been convicted of a felony, or have a matter currently pending in the Baltimore City Circuit Court. Jurors who are qualified are selected on a random basis.

Several rooms are available for your use while waiting to be called to a courtroom for jury selection. In some rooms, movies are shown during the day. In other rooms, you may use battery-operated laptop computers. A third room is available if you need to do work that require quiet. You are also allowed to bring a cellular telephone with you while on jury duty but it must be turned off and used only for out-going calls.

For Faculty and Staff regular pay continues as long as the employee submits a check to the University for the amount of their Jury Duty earnings (not including reimbursement for travel and meals). Baltimore County citizens are selected at random from a merged Motor/Voter list in accordance with the Maryland law. No one can volunteer for jury duty. Each year, approximately 100,000 citizens are sent juror summonses. Enclosed with each summons is a questionnaire which must be completed immediately and returned to the Jury Office. This court randomly selects from a combined list of active voter registration records and drivers' license records. This selection creates the court's "MASTER JURY WHEEL" (a term which originated in the days when names were placed in a large barrel-type wheel and turned around to mix them up; today, however, we use computers to randomly select names).
