Hillcrest, students wear white gis, and instructors wear black gis (note: these rules can vary by schools and systems). A black belt does not automatically mean that one wears a black gi. Black belts must also accrue enough "teaching time" to qualify for full instructor status.

It's just a matter of preference. I wore a white gi for the first twenty or so years in the Art and Mr. LeRoux for probably the first fifteen. When Black became available we gave them a try and found them more comfortable than having to watch everywhere we sat or what we leaned against, trying to avoid getting a spot on our fresh white uniforms and eventually having to trash them because of stains, when they were still serviceable. This is another baseless superstition and Witches wear clothing and robes of every color. Black is the combination of all colors and all vibrational rates of light on the material plane. It is known that black is a very good conductor of energy, therefore wearing black simply helps Witches absorb natural energy to increase the power of their thought forms. The original instructor for our system, Ki-Duk Lee, also taught Tae Kwon Do in his school. The TKD students traditionally wore white, so the Hapkido students wore black. The first day is usually pretty cold and wet, so most people wear an ISDE GoreTex jacket or equivalent. The rest of the way down you can usually start the day in a Pak Jak and then strip down to a jersey once things warm up. Many people do not wear anything. The room is completely private, so tanning in the nude it is perfectly acceptable.
