The star after the serial number is a replacement note that was issued to take the place of a defective note that was discovered. Using the * ('asterisk'=SHIFT-8) key will get it into the system. Since it's too cost-prohibitive to re-issue the same serial number, it's easier to print up a bunch of star notes and then use them to fill the stack once the defects are pulled out. Most star notes don't command a premium unless they are uncirculated, and/or have a real interesting serial number.

On early Rolex watches they stamped the Serial Number on the outside of the case back. Then, around the mid-1940s they moved the serial number to the side of the case (between the lugs) at the 6 o'clock position. It is worth mentioning that the Case Reference Number (i.e. the Model Number) is located on the opposite side of the case at the 12 o'clock position -- the bracelet now must be removed to access these numbers. In version 1, your serial number is printed on a white label on the front of the sleeve of the CD-ROM. It may also be printed on a label on the outside of the white shipping box. The format of the serial number is XXXX-YYYY-YYY-YYY where XXXX are letters. In release 1.0.1, it does not matter whether you type a zero or the letter 'o' for '0' nor whether you type a one or the letter 'i' for "1". Rane product serial numbers have taken on various forms over the 20 plus years we have been manufacturing units. In the very early days, units contained part of the model number within the serial number, and all of this type start at 1002. Ned Steinberger is an engineering genius, but he admits details like dates and numbers aren't his thing. Since the company was sold, moved several times and is now functionally closed, any official documentation appears to be lost. Most of the Seamaster's, Dynamics, De Villes, and Speedmaster's have it on the seven o'clock lug, while some are reported to be on a different lug. Constellations have their serial number on the screw on case back. Older Omegas have serial numbers on the movement.
