Each yard varies depending on sunlight versus shade, traffic, and customer preference. Centipede is the lowest priced and most common lawn grass in our area. Centipede is a low maintenance, medium width blade, crab-apple green colored sod. It has no shade or traffic tolerance. St. Augustine is for customers who need a shade tolerant sod. St. Augustine is a wide bladed sod and color varies by variety. It does not have a traffic tolerance.

Yes, scraps are available when we have thrown off pieces that are not perfect to put on the pallet. These are available for anyone to pick up in the fields themselves. For best result, rototill or spade the area to a depth of 10 to 15 cm. (4 to 6 in.). Eliminate drainage problems by having soil slope away from foundations, etc. Soil test your lawn area with the assistance of qualified service in your area. Then rake in fertilizer, lime, peat, compost, etc. as need to a depth of 7 to 10 cm. (3 to 4 in.). Rake and smooth the soil removing rocks, roots, and large clods. Roll the area lightly with a lawn roller 1/3 full of water.

There is a common misconception that seeding is the best way to establish a lawn because it is much less expensive than sodding. In realty, sodding turns out to be less expensive over time once costs such as increased maintenance inputs and repair are accounted for. Add to that the instantaneous and finished look you get with sod and its clear to see that sodding is preferable in most instances.

However, most people estimate that if you don’t include all your time in learning and setting up a processor (anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 dollars), space, collecting and filtering the waste vegetable oil and making the fuel (about two hours per 50 gallons) – you can get the costs down to .70 cents a gallon. Including your time, space, training and all the necessary materials makes “home-brewing” more expensive than just the “free” waste vegetable oil.

We've grown several types of grass over our history but no other grass performs quite as well as the new Superior Plus Sod. It is the ONLY fescue (green all year long, soft and stable blades) that REPAIRS itself. Other types of popular "long running" fescues require reseeding or patch sodding in case of problems.

At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry three types of sod. For cool season turf (which stays green year round and is what most of us in this area have), we carry both tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass sod. If you have full sun / part shade, both varieties will grow nicely. If you have areas that receive more shade, tall fescue is the best choice. We also carry zoysia sod, which is a warm season grass that turns tan in color from October – April.

Digital photos saved in any image file format will print just fine, but photos saved in either raw, converted to tiff, or in tiff format, will contain much more image data, and therefore produce a higher quality print. Each time a jpeg file is re-saved it loses image data. Although it requires a much larger storage card, we always recommend capturing images on the highest quality resolution, and in raw or tiff file formats.
