Generally, any bike- a road bike, a mountain bike, a hybrid- can be used in a triathlon. In fact, some courses (many turns, lot's of climbs and descents, are slightly better suited for a classic road bike. However, the bike-leg of a triathlon is basically a time trial. You want to go as fast as you can, using as little energy as possible. A triathlon frame has slightly different geometry.

Fit is very important - not only can proper fit help avoid injuries, it will make you faster. Finally, as a general rule, try to get lighter bikes and equipment.

We see more and more hybrids every year. My personal opinion is that BRAG is easier if you use a road bike with skinny tires because it has less road resistance. And road bikes tend to be lighter weight than fat-tire bikes. Those with mountain bikes may want to put slicks on their bikes. You will never ride alone on BRAG. There will always be someone riding at or near your pace.

Quad bikes are designed for off-road use only. They have special low pressure tyres which are not road legal. Most bikes have a fixed back axle, which makes them unsuitable for cornering on hard surfaces. The factory supplied lighting kits do not conform with the Road Traffic Act. Your bike needs to conform to British Triathlon rules but most standard racing bikes or mountain bikes are acceptable. A racing bike however will be an easier choice for races on the public highway. It is your responsibility to use a bike that is in a roadworthy condition. Mountain bikes have fatter tires, which are not as highly inflated, to give you better traction on dirt.

A mountain bike format will lead your body into an aggressive posture pitched over the top tube of the bike. This is so that you are able to meet the challenge of your ride with full-on versatility in balance and counterbalance. A comfort bike will lead you into an upright body position so that you are sitting back on your "sitting bones." This position reduces compression points in your wrists, elbows, neck, shoulders back and rear-end.

It's easy to tell the difference. The single point bike hoister lifts your load using two straps and one attachment point in the ceiling. The four point storage hoister lifts your load using two straps and four attachment points in the ceiling.

ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) is the general term used to describe a vehicle designed for off-road use. This could include quad bikes, Landrovers, Argo-Cats etc. Quad bikes are the sit-astride four wheel bikes with handlebars. The farming community tends to call them ATVs, while the forestry calls them ATCs (All Terrain Cycles). Leisure users tend to use the term Quad Bike. We use the term interchangeably!

On September 9, 1999 I called the local fuel oil supplier to discuss fuels, DOT inspectors, and the perils of having dyed fuel in a tank. Here are the high points: Off road Diesel #2 and fuel oil # 2 differ only in the tax applied at the time of sale. Both are dyed red. Most people ride hybrid or mountain bikes on these trails. They both work fine, especially with conservative tires, for example semi-slick tires. A road or touring bike equipped with slightly knobby tires will also work well. However, a road bike with slick skinny racing tires isn't really suitable for this trip. More details.

It doesn't look too nice but the best thing is to waxoyl all the bolt heads that get furred up and the oil cooler lines, all round the swing arm, the footpeg mounts. Come spring you can just wash it off and you've saved a lot of mess.

As a guideline, allow for the 3" depth of the speaker enclosures, which are approximately 4.75" in diameter, and a standard 3/8" mounting bolt.
