Michigan Tech is deploying a new Initial Sign-On (ISO) Password that is, simply, a password to give you access to applications requiring it. It should not be set to the same password used to log into a computer in a computer lab or office.

Short for Maximum Transmission Unit- the largest physical packet size, measured in bytes that a network can transmit. Any messages larger than the MTU are divided into smaller packets before being sent. Ethernet limits transfers of up to 1514 (include Ethernet header) octets of data. Normally, you should leave this value as the default value. Change it only if the ISP is providing a MTU that is not optimal.

Even though Office Open XML was already an ECMA standard, we felt that there was value taking it on to the ISO. This was mainly because we had been asked to by various customers (mostly governments). They wanted to have our formats in the domain of the international community.

The MTU setting controls the maximum ethernet packet size your PC will send. Why a limit? because although larger packets can be constructed and sent, Your ISP and Internet backbone routers and equipment will fragment any larger than their limit, then these parts are re-assembled by the target equipment before reading. The minus 28 is for the header information (IP and ICMP). If this packet size gives fragmentation errors, decrease the value until the packet is echoed without fragmentation. An MTU of 1500 (ping 1472) is the windows default value. The -f parameter sets the Don't Fragment Flag in the IP header, and -w ensures that ping waits for a reasonable amount of time for the echo packet to return.

Here's a simple analogy. TCP/IP takes a web page and cuts it into nice neat squares (packets). It puts each piece in an envelope with the address (header) of where it’s going for the routers to send it along its way. Then all the letters are delivered to your mailbox. So: The maximum speed of TCP/IP transfers through a SLIP (Serial Line Protocol) or PPP (Point To Point Protocol) connection is, first and foremost, limited by the speed of the modem.

You will need to use 'adb' to adjust either the kernel or the CSlip driver to change this value (slip_mtu).
