What is the difference between dyes and pigments?

FAQ on Paint for Artists
Dyes, colorants in which the coloring matter is dissolved in liquid, are absorbed into the material to which they are applied. Pigments, consisting of extremely fine particles of ground coloring matter suspended in liquid, form a paint film that is bonded to the surface it is applied to. Dyes are sometimes precipitated onto an inert base and ground into pigments.

Generally speaking, are pigments better than dyes?

Magnolia Editions - Frequently Asked Questions
We think so. Dyes are synthetic, often unstable and sooner or later (usually sooner), they will fade. At Magnolia we have a deep concern for permanence and durability. In both traditional and digital printmaking we use pigments, not dyes. Historically, pigments (derived from minerals) have stood the test of time. From the paintings of cavemen to the first Gutenburg Bible, from Rembrandt to Sam Francis, all lasting images have been made with pigments. See similar questions...

What is the difference between using the dyes for margins and using the dyes for orientation?

Bradley Products: Frequently Asked Questions
The dyes applied in the classic fashion for margins are applied to the perimeter of the surgical specimen before it is cut or sectioned or otherwise altered. The dye adheres to the periphery and once the sectioning is complete, anyplace where dye is located is a tissue margin. Many tumor margins today are not examined in the perpendicular fashion, but in the tangential fashion as originally described by Frederick Mohs. In these applications, anything on the slides represents tumor at the margin. See similar questions...
