The simple answer is "yes". It is always a good idea when traveling to have all of your bases covered be not relying a single method of acquiring money. In general traveler's checks from a well known financial institution are the safest and easiest form of currency to use. In most circumstances, they can be cashed for Dominican Pesos with just a copy of your passport.

The Galapagos National Park Fee must be paid in cash at the Galapagos airport when you arrive. Most alcohol purchases, tips, and souvenirs must also be paid in cash, though a few shops on Santa Cruz accept credit cards. Although there are ATMs in Santa Cruz, it is best to withdraw money on the mainland before you go as island ATMs are not always working.

Traveler checks are very good to have in case of lost or stolen checks. You can get these replaced easier than cash or credit cards. The most widely used credit cards in Costa Rica are Visa and Master Card. It is also fairly easy to find ATM's in larger cities, including San José. Some ATM's dispense US dollars. All banks will exchange US dollars and some will exchange Euros.

Camp Adventure recommends cashing your stipend and getting Traveler's checks. Please DO NOT TAKE CASH. Be aware that in some locations there is a fee, normally about $3, to cash Traveler's checks. Your student may also think about taking their ATM/DEBT card for emergency use. However, ATM's are not available in all locations, so Traveler's checks are your best option. I recommend that you bring a small amount in cash, but that you bring most of your money in the form of travelers’ checks. American Express travelers’ checks are the most widely-accepted in China. Most of our hotels will be able to change money at the front desk, for a small fee. You also can change money at many Bank of China branches, but given our tight schedule it will be more convenient to do it at the hotels.
