National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive CenterOver 2,000 diaries, letters, and memoirs are held in archives, college and university libraries, historical societies, and public libraries throughout the U.S. Many are still in the treasured possession of pioneer descendants. Historian Merrill Mattes estimated that one out of every 250 travelers kept some sort of written record of their journey. However, through the years, many of these were lost or destroyed.

People were born and people died during the typical five month journey.
