What causes a candle to smoke, and what can I do to correct it?

National Candle Association: About Candles - Frequently Aske...
A well-made candle will create virtually no smoke when burning properly. However, if the wick becomes too long, or an air current disturbs the flame's teardrop shape, small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. Any candle will soot if the flame is disturbed. To avoid this, always trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use and be sure to place candles away from drafts, vents or air currents.

If soot builds up inside the container, after you have extinguished the flame and the wax has cooled, spray some Windex on a paper towel and wipe out the inside of the container. What causes bumps, dents, or white marks in the wax after extinguishing the candle?

Mudhouse Candle Co.
Occasionally this may happen due to the nature of soy wax. The benefits of soy wax far outweigh any appearance flaws. This does not normally happen on candles that have been properly extinguished. To get your wick back, take a long grill lighter and melt the wax on the top layer until you can see the wick. Once you can see the wick, dump out the wax that you have melted with the lighter into another wax safe container, NOT into a trash can as the wax will melt the plastic. See similar questions...
