Medical compression stockings will be applied at the end of each vein treatment session. Stockings are worn for 72 hours after the first session and daily for 2 weeks.

Contraindications (medical conditions in which compression is not recommended): Ischemia (e.g. advanced arterial disease) of the legs; Uncontrolled congestive heart failure; Untreated septic phlebitis of the leg; and, Phlegmasia coerulea dolens. The wearing of compression should also be used with caution in the presence of: Skin infections; Seeping dermatoses; Incompatibility to fabric of garment; Impaired sensitivity of the limb; and, Immobility (confinement to bed).

Surgical procedures that take more than an hour carry a risk of blood clot formation (deep vein thrombosis). Being up and about after surgery helps avoid this, as does wearing compression stockings. Whilst in hospital you will be given compression stockings and it is useful to continue wearing them for a few days after your surgery.
