Allergic reactions could occur after any vaccine. Pain or tenderness, swelling, or warmth at the injection site may occur in about 25 percent of people who receive the vaccine and last one to two days. About 3 percent of people will have muscle or joint aches, flu-like symptoms, fever, or chills. Tests of vaccine safety and effectiveness are not complete for children younger than 15, so preventing tick bites is the recommended alternative until a vaccine becomes available.

The meningococcal vaccine has an excellent safety profile. Side effects are mild and infrequent, consisting primarily of redness and swelling at the site of injection lasting up to two days. Meningococcal immunization should be deferred during any acute illness. The vaccine should not be administered to women who are pregnant or individuals sensitive to thimerosal or other components of the vaccine.

The bacterial meningitis vaccine is safe, effective and generally well-tolerated. The vaccine has been shown to provide protection against the most common strains of the disease, including serogroups A, C, Y and W-135. An individual will not contract bacterial meningitis from the vaccine. The vaccination is given in one injection.

Influenza vaccine is usually well tolerated. There may be temporary soreness at the site of injection. Rarely it can cause fever and muscle aches lasting up to two days, and very rarely it has been associated with Guillan-Barre syndrome.

Serious side effects reported after receiving hepatitis B vaccine are very uncommon. There is no confirmed scientific evidence that hepatitis B vaccine causes chronic illness, including multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, or autoimmune disorders. There is no risk of HBV infection from the vaccine. A low rate of anaphylaxis (hives, difficulty breathing, shock) has been observed in vaccine recipients.

The side effects of the hepA vaccine are mild, and include soreness at the injection site, headache, malaise, mild fever, muscle or joint ache, and gastro-intestinal tract disorders.
