A student may also choose to use the phone line in their room to connect to an independent Internet Service Provider. However, this will not allow students access to a high-speed connection nor will it allow access to the campus network. In addition, this will tie up the phone line.

No, a phone cord will not connect to the Residential Network. The campus network utilizes a high-bandwidth ethernet infrastructure; a phone cord does not support this kind of data throughput. A special cable is needed, which is commonly referred to as an ethernet or CAT-5/CAT-5e (Category 5/5e) cable, and each computer must be connected via these cables in order to have access to campus resources. The head on either end is about twice as wide as a phone cable's head.
