Is it a glider or a sailplane?
Sky Sailing - FAQTechnically speaking, we fly sailplanes but the terms gilder and sailplane are often interchanged. We think of a "glider" as having a glide ration of less than 20:1. This means for every foot that it goes down, it goes 20 feet forward. There are sailplanes with glide ratios of over 60:1. The highest glide ratio in our fleet is the Stemme Motorglider with a glide ratio of 50:1.
Question: What is the difference between a sailplane and a glider?
Model Airplane FAQGliders are planes that glide down to earth without power. A good example might be a WW2 troop glider. It's not designed to catch or ride thermals and climb, just to be released from its tow plane and glide down to earth. The space shuttle in its landing mode would be another example. A sailplane, OTOH, is designed to ride the wind and climb in the thermals and other updrafts. See similar questions...
