The maximum load of graduate credit hours for graduate students, without special permission, is 9 hours during regular sessions, 4 hours during the May session, and 7 hours during summer sessions (June and July). Students in a major wishing to register for more than 18 semester hours must have the permission of the master of their college. Students with undeclared majors may seek that permission from their academic advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

The maximum number of hours for backfill is the number of certified course hours plus 16 hours (which is based on an allowance for 8 hours driving time before and after the course). For example, if the course is 32 hours in length, an agency claiming backfill could be reimbursed for up to 48 hours.

It is suggested that the student who is desiring to earn a doctoral degree, enroll for a second Master's degree and allow those credits to apply toward the doctoral degree. Once this is done, the student would like only an additional 24 credits for the doctoral degree.

The number of hours a subject is taught during a week make up the credit hours. E.g.: A subject may be taught 3 hours a week and so the number of credit hours for that subject is 3. You have to enroll for a minimum of 9 credit hours every semester to be in status. If you are enrolled in less than 9 credit hours, you will have to file an exception with the Office of International Programs.

Most students enroll for a total of 12-16 credit hours. The general recommendation from faculty members is to spend two hours of reading/study time outside of class for each hour of class time. If a student is working or has other commitments, the total time required to be successful in a class should be considered when deciding each semester’s credit-hour load.

Twelve credit hours is the minimum for a full-time load in a fall or spring semester, while 18 credit hours is the maximum load. Any student wishing to take more than 18 hours in a fall or spring semester (an overload) must have the approval of one of the academic deans. Six credit hours is the minimum for a full-time load in a summer term, while 7 credits is the maximum load. Again, a student wishing to enroll in an overload must see the appropriate academic dean.

The answer to this question depends entirely on how hard you are willing to work, on how well prepared you are for college, and on how organized you are. A full-time load for a student can range from 12 to 18 semester hours, though students need to average 15 hours per semester to graduate in four years. Some students struggle to keep a 2.5 average with 14 or 15 hours a semester, while others take 18 hours every semester and graduate with a 4-point.

On F1 status you should be registered for a minimum 12 credit hours in UIC. This is typically 3 courses in UIC. You can register for 8 credit hours if you have a 50% assistantship (not on campus job). If you are an RA/TA then the dept might require you to register for 12 credit hours still.

One less hour than half of what your specific degree program requires. For example, if your program requires 120, the maximum number of hours that would transfer would be 59 from a two year community college. If a student is transferring from a four year university then the last 30 hours of the degree must be taken at Tech.

The average semester load for full-time students is 15 to 17 semester hours. Students must carry at least 12 semester hours to be classified as full-time.

Is it possible for me to take more than four courses in a semester and to complete my programme earlier than scheduled? I am currently in between jobs.
