It is a joy to discover the often hidden gifts and talents these students possess. When a student enters Scenic Land, he or she is tested to determine present levels of performance (what she knows well, and what skills may be missing from past learning). We then slightly back up the curriculum to ensure success right away, and then move forward at a "just under frustration" pace.

Although many students taught are 'gifted' or very computer literate, our programs can accommodate students of all levels. Our student:teacher ratio is very low and we strive to to teach students at their own pace. Advanced students will be taught as fast as they can learn and want to be shown more advanced concepts and skills.

Students are screened for possible giftedness upon entering the school system, as required by state law. Accelerated math is offered starting in fourth grade. Beginning in ninth grade, Yorktown High School offers honors courses in English, Math, and Science. Some eighth grade honors math students are offered the chance to take Regents Earth Science at the high school. The district offers 18 AP and 9 college level courses at the high school.

Once here, students have access to a range of resources such as the Student Assistance Office, Careers Service, Academic Learning Skills and an assigned personal tutor to help get the most out of the university experience. In addition to the many clubs and societies run by our Students Union, we are pleased to be a member university of the International Society, which offers our students the opportunity to make friends with students from other universities in the Greater Manchester region.

Yes, the Study Center is located in 114 Knutti Hall, and tutorial services are free. Additionally, the Writing Center is located in Room 207 Knutti Hall. Appointments are necessary and can be made in either 114 or 207 Knutti Hall.

IDL students have access to the University System of Georgia’s GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online), as well as to various UGA resources including, UGA Libraries, EITS Computer Services, Learning Disabilities/Disability Services, Tutorial Services, the Language Laboratory, the University Health Center, Parking Services, and UGA’s Campus Transit System. Though all of the services are available to IDL students, some are only available in the Athens, Georgia, area.

They both highlight the missed opportunities to identify and serve gifted students in the U.S. resulting in a call for additional research and programming in the field of gifted education.
