Not always! Since, over the last twenty years, customers often no longer required provision for analogue record reproduction, many amplifiers have been built without a phono stage and RIAA equalisation necessary for vinyl replay. This applies to the majority of cheaper amplifiers and surround-sound systems and to virtually all compact systems. A line input took the place of the phono input. Recently, however, the number of quality amplifiers with a phono input is increasing again.

The amplifier is mounted by the front passengers feet (left hand drive) or drivers feet (right hand drive), below the A pillar near the wheel. The wires from the head unit and battery connect to the amplifier using one big connector. The balanced low level signals should be twisted. The big connector has two rows of pins. The first row starts with two large red wires and is numbered 1 through 20. The second row starts with two large black wires and is numbered 21 through 39. See similar questions...

If you are connecting a stereo amplifier or two different amplifiers to a stereo cabinet make sure the impedance and power handling of the cabinet matches your amplifier/amplifiers. If you are using our standard 4x12" this has two sockets and a selector switch on the back, setting this switch to stereo splits the cabinet into right & left. a beginner, you certainly don't need a stadium-sized earth-shaker. To learn, get something relatively small that can handle the low end. Be sure to get a bass amp however; you can seriously damage a guitar amp's speaker by running bass through it, and it won't sound that good anyway. In terms of connections: It depends on whether you want to connect an SA-CD player with multichannel output rather than just stereo.
