This depends on what type of filter(s) you have, and the loading (loading refers to the amount of particles the filter has trapped). Essentially, you must replace the filter once it starts to reduce the air flow excessively. This can result in your furnace's heat exchanger over-heating, your safety limits getting damaged; it can even create a fire hazard1 It is also the leading cause of air conditioner services calls: a plugged filter can cause the evaporator coil to "freeze up".

For best results, the filter should be replaced after 50 gallons of consumed water. Some older models have a filter indicator that turns red after 40 gallons of water consumption; however, the filters are now designed to filter 50 gallons of water.

There is a relationship between air filter restriction and mileage. The theory behind this is simple, the harder an engine has to work to suck air through the intake tubes and air filter, the more gas gets wasted in the process. We do, in fact we have designed an exact replacement for NSA model 100 filters. Exact, in that NSA filters were unique in that they flowed down, rather than up. This is important because when replaceing an NSA filter, your plumbing will be set up with the inlet at the top and outlet at the bottom. If you replace with most any other filter, the inlet will be at the bottom and your plumbing may not reach.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The frequency of filter changes is driven by how much your HVAC system operates, which is driven by the severity of the seasons. You have two choices. Stay with the industry standard 50 sq. ft. filter that comes with the spa which filters down to 50 micron or us our 50 sq. ft. 1 micron after market filter. The manufacture tells us that with normal use and weekly care, your filter should last approximately 1-2 years. However, with its nominal cost (about $40, standard 50 micron filter capacity) and it’s vital importance to keeping the water clean, most replace it after 1 year.
