Frequently Asked Questions

When would you recommend a UV ozone for water?

RGF - Recycle Systems Q & A
For potable water an advanced oxidation unit of UV and ozone works well or for use on industry water recycling. The combination of hydrogen peroxide, UV and ozone works very well.

What works better: UV or ozone, on water?

RGF - Recycle Systems Q & A
It depends on the problem. UV light is for disinfection only and works only if the water has good turbidity. Ozone will remove iron and odor for example, the best is to use both.

Will the combination of ozone and UV light solve all water problems?

RGF - Recycle Systems Q & A
No. It will not remove lead or calcium (hardness) or other minerals. It will do a great job on color, bacteria, odor, viruses, iron and microbial growth.

Will a UV system restrict my water pressure?

Frequently Asked Questions
No, Sterilight systems are designed with inlet/outlet ports correctly sized for the specific application. As an example, the 8 USGPM system comes with 3/4" ports. The typical pressure drop on this system would be 2-3 psi.

Will a UV system kill all microorganisms in my water?

Frequently Asked Questions
All Sterilight systems are rated for a 4-log inactivation of bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts under specific conditions. This rating is at a specific flow rate, and water quality. It is a good idea to have your water microbiologically tested prior to installing a UV system.

Will UV change the taste and/or odor of my water?

Frequently Asked Questions
With chemical disinfection, such as chlorination, the taste and odor of your water will change (depending on chlorine levels water can smell and taste of bleach) and disinfection by-products will be produced. A few examples of chemical disinfection by-products (DBP) are trihalomethanes and haloacetic acid. Both of these DBP's can be carcinogenic when ingested at high levels. The pH and conductivity of drinking water also changes when chlorine is added. UV is a physical type of disinfection.

Can changes in cloudiness cause larger UV changes than ozone depletion?

Frequently Asked Questions about Stratospheric Ozone Depleti...
Long-term trends in cloud type and amount are largely unknown due to the relatively short data record of comprehensive cloud observations, and the high variability of clouds on inter-annual and longer time scales. Some evidence exists showing that, at least over the time span of satellite-based ozone measurements, changes in cloud cover have been much less important than stratospheric ozone reductions in causing surface UV changes.

Do your UV lamps produce ozone?

CaluTech Blue - Ultraviolet Clean Air UV Air Purifiers
Many UV lamps intentionally produce ozone in large amounts (UV-V), which we do not recommend, nor does the EPA or American Lung Association. The UV lamps we use (UV-C) have special tubing that filters out the 185nm ozone wavelength, however all UV lamps that are considered 'ozone free' do produce some ozone, but the amount of ozone produced is so minute it is not considered an ozone producing lamp.

What is UV?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
Ultraviolet (UV) light is at the invisible, violet end of the light spectrum. Even though we can't see UV light, we are exposed to UV rays from all light sources, including the sun.

What does ozone do for water?

RGF - Recycle Systems Q & A
Ozone gas entered in water will disinfect, floc, clarify, deodorize, oxidize organics and some metals.

What does Ozone do in pool water?

Houston Pool & Spa Builders - Design to Installation - C...
Ozone will sanitize, disinfect, and oxidize water. Sanitizing means ozone kill most bacteria and living organisms. Disinfecting means ozone kills all potential disease carrying capabilities of these bacteria and living organisms. Oxidation means the contamination that come from pool users such as body chemistry (sweat and urine), lotions and personal care items which contains lots of ammonia are also burned up by ozone.

What is better: UV or corona for water?

RGF - Recycle Systems Q & A
We make both and recommend both for different applications. If you need 1 ppm of dissolved ozone in water, we would recommend a corona with an oxygen generator.

Why do you recommend the Via-jet (R) over the Water Pik (R)?

Frequently Asked Questions
First, I have owned both and both are good products. Colgate originally owned the rights to the Via-jet (R). The Via-jet (R) comes with a lid to keep dust out of the reservoir while not in use, and also comes with both the standard and sulcus tips (2 each). Finally, the Water Pik (R) model has changed and our cannulae adapters no longer fit the newer model so we no longer sell it. The ViaJet has recently been revised and is available now as the Viajet PRO (Sept. 2002).

Do factors other than stratospheric ozone affect the amount of UV radiation that reaches the earth?

Atmospheric Science Division - FAQ on Ozone Depletion
Although the ozone layer is the one constant defense against UV penetration, several other factors can have an effect: Since the sun's rays impact the Earth's surface at the most direct angle over the equator they are the most intense at this latitude. During winter months, the sun's rays strike at a more oblique angle than they do in the summer. This means that all solar radiation travels a longer path through the atmosphere to reach the Earth, and is therefore less intense.

What is the difference between corona discharge (CD) and ultraviolet light (UV) ozone?

Blue Air Products - F.A.Q.
CD ozonators use an exposed electrical arc to generate ozone. A byproduct of Corona Discharge ozonation is nitric acid. When mixed with moisture from the humidity in the grow space this corrosive “syrup” contaminates the surfaces that produce the ozone. This requires frequent cleaning of the arcing surfaces or the contamination will reduce the ozone output of the generator. UV lamps use concentrated ultraviolet light waves to produce ozone.

But you also offer an UV option. Does it produce ozone. Should I be worried ?

Air Purifiers Center
The UV lamps used in AllerAir Air Purifiers are classified as non-ozone producing generator lamps. All electrical devices produce a quantity of ozone but the level produced by AllerAir's germicidal lamps is well below the allowable standards. Choosing the UV option will afford you protection against airborne pathogens, and bacteria

How is UV-C different from ozone generators?

UV Clear Systems, Inc. - UV Light Pool Sanitizing Equipment ...
The short wave UV-C band from the lamp provides a strong germicidal effect as water flows through the reactor chamber. Our systems do not form ozone. UV Clear® Systems is cost effective, safe, easy to operate, easy to install, uses less components, is efficient and requires little maintenance or monitoring. We have found that UV Clear® Systems works with ozone generators for noticeable clearer water.

Will water temperature affect ozone?

FAQ about Ozone, world's most powerful sanitizer! Delzone Oz...
Wide variations in pool water temperature will affect how well ozone works. An ozone generator should be designed and sized for maximum water temperatures and bather load.

What is ozone and how it is generated in QFL Super Water System?

QFL - Quality For Life - Air & Water Purifiers - Qualty ...
Have you ever taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced the clean, fresh smell in the air. That’s Ozone at work. Ozone is a tri-atomic allotrope of oxygen formed by recombination of oxygen atoms. It is a colorless gas with characteristic pungent odor and can easily be detected at low level of .05ppm (parts per million) Lightning creates an abundance of activated oxygen – Ozone (O3) and negative & positive ions in the air.
