Well often you can, but you will rarely be as happy with a universal as with the original. Universal remotes have a very poor track record for working all the features of particular brands. They are generally designed for main stream sets that don't have many features. They usually do poor with TV/VCR combo's or VCR's because they will rarely operate the menus. If you have any kind of COMBO unit (TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR) a UNIVERSAL REMOTE WILL NOT WORK. If you have a TV only, it depends. If all you want to do is turn on and off your unit, and maybe adjust the volume or change the channels, then a universal remote might work for you.
