Live trees are sometimes removed from park land if, once inspected by our Forestry Crew, it is determined that the tree may pose a threat to the general public or adjacent structures.

Because a design for the new center has not yet been developed, there is no way to predict how many trees would be affected. Poison ivy is not routinely removed from park land unless it is near a playground, on a trail or other high-use area. Poison ivy is native to Virginia and is considered a natural part of our parks.

The information will be forwarded to an inspector who will check the area and take appropriate action. It may also require the installation of a "No Dumping" sign. It is also recommended that the area's neighborhood association include a message in their newsletter informing their neighbors that dumping and encroaching onto park land is illegal.

The length of life for a tree depends upon so many things. The climate conditions (water, temperature, sunlight, etc.), fire dangers, the type of tree, and the condition of the soil are all things that help determine how long a tree will live. So, the true answer is ... it depends! I can tell you that the oldest living tree is a bristlecone pine tree called " Methuselah". It is currently 4,767 years old!

No. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority owns and operates some of the larger parks, such as Bull Run, Occoquan and Fountain Head. They may be reached by calling 703-352-5900. The National Park Service also owns some land in Fairfax County. They may be reached by calling 202-208-3100. Other park land is owned by the state, and some is owned by towns, such as Vienna. We strongly discourage anyone from bringing their own grill into a park. Most picnic areas have grills that you may use.

Landowners who subport the aims of the Carbon Consultancy and are prepared to commit land for tree planting subject to agreements to protect their future, own the land. Some of the largest are found in the Greenbrier section of the Park. From Gatlinburg, drive east along US 321 (stop-light #3 in Gatlinburg) for approximately 6 miles. Turn right on Greenbrier Road and travel 3.1 miles along the Little Pigeon River to Greenbrier Cove. Turn left at Ramsay Prong Road and travel 1.5 miles to the parking area. An eight-mile roundtrip hike will take you through virgin stands of chestnut oaks, poplars, and black cherry.

Topping creates many problems for trees including insect infestations and diseases, weak limbs, shock and starvation to the tree and poor aesthetic qualities. James, A few questions: Is there a corrosion problem using salt water? If Galveston sand is used as a base, wouldn't the water turn in to a big mud soup? Maybe a heavier sand could be used, or even small pebbles. I assume the cannons would prefer clean water... Has a circular pool been considered? Imagine, the world's first endless wave!
