Your water meter may be the most useful tool in identifying leaks. ELCO's meter readers find most major leaks but smaller leaks are more difficult to detect. To see if you have any leaks, follow these easy steps... Locate your water meter. It is usually in a pit in your front yard under a metal lid. You will need a pair of pliers or vice grips to remove the lid. If there are two meters in the pit, the one closest to your house is yours.

During the hottest parts of summer, pools can lose quite a bit (1/2 to 1 inch a week) of water due to sunlight, heat, and splash out. There is a simple test you can perform at home to eliminate evaporation as possibility: Bring the pool water to normal level. Fill a five - gallon bucket with pool water to about 1 inch from the top. Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool. Ensure that the bucket is immersed in the pool at least five inches.

Check the water meter for movement on the dial or leak indicator, also do a visual check of the connections at the water meter. If the dial or leak indicator shows movement, then shut off the main cutoff valve going into the residence (usually located right outside the house), leaving the water meter on. The homeowner is responsible for the water service (lateral) from the house to the property line and all the pipes within the house.
