A stream is a way of thinking about digital information for which there may be no ending point. The most conventional form of digital information is the file. Files always have a beginning and an end, but streams may or may not, and therefore software which uses streams must not require finding the end of the file in order to process it. Streams are usually delivered in packets which are self-contained, and usually allow seeking (i.e. fast forward) for further points in the streams.

Streaming Media is the process of converting audio & video media and digitally preparing that media so that it can be broadcasted over a traditional telephone or broadband network via the Internet and viewed on computer screens on-demand.

It is a technique for transferring video images over a network to a workstation so that they are processed continuously ("stream") in real time. For example, a person viewing streaming video does not have to wait for the entire video to be uploaded; rather it starts to play after a short buffering period. Streaming video also implies audio delivery.

RealMedia files can be delivered by a server in two different ways: The server can just deliver them as it delivers any other files (this is called "HTTP-protocol" or "HTTP-stream"), or "RealAudio server" software can be used on the server (this is called "PNM-protocol" or "Network-stream"). Pseudo-streaming" is a discriminating name for HTTP-stream. It was invented by the RealAudio promotion to suggest that you need to use the RealAudio server if you want to get "real" streaming.
