When you arrive on the second floor of the Courthouse you will check in with the jury commissioner at the sign-in desk where you will be given further instructions. After all jurors have been checked in, you will go through our juror orientation program. You will view a video and the bailiff will go over many other areas of concern. You do not need any special skills, training, or legal knowledge to be a juror.

Pursuant to section 12-16-82 of the Code of Alabama, if you do not appear for jury duty, you are subject to a fine of up to $100.00 and imprisonment for up to 10 days. If you have a conflict with the days you are summoned, please contact the Court Administrator's office at 256-532-3641 as soon as possible.

If you fail to report to jury duty or do not complete the questionnaire, you may receive a summons and be required to explain to the Administrative Judge as to why this information was not provided or why you did not report. You may also be subject to arrest and possibly a fine.

When you are to report for jury duty, you will receive a notice assigning you to a panel and giving you a specific date and time to report. You will also be given instructions to call an automated voice recording to reconfirm whether or not your service is needed for that particular day.

In Anchorage, you should park at the 5th Avenue parking garage at 5th Avenue and B Street. Bring your ticket to the court for validation.

Juror pay and mileage is determined by the California Legislature. Pursuant to California Civil Code of Procedure 215, jurors are paid at the rate of $15.00 per day plus one-way mileage beginning the second day of service. Mileage is paid at the rate of .34 cents per mile one-way. Jurors do not receive juror pay or mileage for the first day.

Upon reporting to petit jury duty, you will report to the Jury Assembly Room (Room M-10) which is located on the mezzanine level off the main courthouse lobby. Once you are checked in, you will view a brief video on your duties as a juror. You will then have to wait in the Jury Assembly Area until it is your turn to be sent to court. When you report to court, the judge will tell you about the case, introduce the lawyers and others who may be involved with the case at hand.

On days when your attendance is not required, you should continue your normal schedule of work, school, etc.

Jurors should not disobey a summons to appear for Jury Duty. The Court has full authority to enforce their appearance. Failure to appear constitutes contempt of Court, and is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment.

Eligibility for federal jury service is dependent both upon an individual meeting the legal qualifications for service and upon the random chance of having one's name drawn from the source lists. Each judicial district must have a formal written plan for the selection of jurors, which provides for random selection from a fair cross-section of the community in the district, and which prohibits discrimination in the selection process.

You are selected from a list of registered voters, licensed drivers and persons with an MVA identification card. The first time you are selected you are sent a questionnaire to determine if you qualify for jury duty. You cannot serve on a jury in Baltimore City if you are not a resident of Baltimore City, have been convicted of a felony, or have a matter currently pending in the Baltimore City Circuit Court. Jurors who are qualified are selected on a random basis.

If you receive any compensation for jury duty, you must return that compensation (minus your expenses) to you departmental budget. You can do this at Student Financial Services (Sutton Hall, Second floor).

The summons that a juror initially receives in the mail indicates their reporting place, and the reporting date and time. Thereafter, jurors are instructed to call the code-a-phone (this is different terminology than the 'special phone number' language used in the handbook) for a pre-recorded announcement advising him or her of future reporting dates. It is important that jurors report promptly on the date and time shown on the summons or recorded on the code-a-phone.

You need to contact the jury commissioner for the court that you were summonsed to appear, immediately. A new date to report will be scheduled.

Unfortunately yes. You may experience a situation where you are called to sit as a prospective juror and the case resolves just moments before the trial begins. If this should happen to you, please do not fell as if your time has been wasted. Your presence alone encourages resolution.

If you have received a summons, please call the jury information line (865) 273-5499 after 5 p.m. the day before you are summoned to report. There will be a message for each Judge on the recording. Please listen carefully and follow the instructions.

On the first day you report for jury duty you will receive information about jury service from the jury clerk, view a video which will help you to know what jury service in the federal court is like and you will be administered the juror oath. You might also participate in jury selection for a trial beginning on that day. Court usually begins at 9 a.m. and ends by 5 p.m., with an hour for lunch and a brief break approximately every 1 ½ hours.
