Growers typically either screw them far enough into the ground so that approximately 8-10 inches of the anchor rod are sticking out of the ground or they screw them completely into the ground, leaving the anchor eye at or slightly below ground level. By leaving 8-10 inches out of the ground, the anchor can be easily spotted thus avoiding damage to machinery and the anchor itself. By putting the eye of the anchor at or below ground level, most potential damage to machinery can be avoided.

The anchors (bolts) are placed by the climber who "develops" the route. He may place them as he climbs the route, or he may rappel the route, stopping to place anchors on the way down. Bolts are not cheap, bolting a route costs the climber both money and effort.

There are several ways of doing this. You can auger a hole, put the anchor into the ground, then backfill the hole with soil. Alternatively, the anchors can be screwed into the ground either manually or mechanically. Adapters are readily available or you can build one that will enable you to screw the anchor into the ground using the PTO driven auger. If screwing the anchor into the ground manually, insert a rod into the eye of the anchor and turn.

A - The anchors are galvanised, heavy steel rods with an eye at one end and an auger plate at the lower end and they are screwed into the ground until the eye is almost level with the surface.

Two to three feet is ideal.. Any more than that and you run a bigger risk of the pool caving in. You always want to make sure the water level is higher than the dirt. If the pool is to far into the ground and the ground around it gets to wet it could easily cave in. It is also a good idea to wait at least two years after the pool is installed before draining it.
