mil PVC or greater already has an embossing on one side, processed during manufacture that provides a controlled pattern. This embossing helps PVC, already known for its flexibility, to conform to and 'grip' the contours of the ground.

All surgeons have different opinions regarding massaging smooth breast implants implants. Some doctors ask all their patients to do it, and others say that it is not necessary or beneficial. The doctors who suggest it believe that it helps to keep the pocket open, thus helping to deter capsule contracture. Whether or not your doctor asks you to massage has nothing to do with how the surgery is performed. It's simply a matter of whether or not your surgeon prefers and recommends massage.

Textured implants were intended to lessen the risk of capsular contracture (hardening of the breast from scar tissue forming around the implant). The success of this is controversial. Many surgeons prefer to use textured implants when they use contoured (anatomic implants).

Many techniques have been developed over the years to decrease the scar tissue (capsular contracture) around breast implants. Originally it was thought that a textured shell may decrease the capsule, but this in fact is probably not true. Some plastic surgeons feel that a capsule may cause more rippling and other difficulties, probably does not decrease the capsule formation rate. Smooth implants are used more commonly in the US.

Slightly textured - similar to the texture to that is embossed into the vinyl top of a car. . We often say that the panels mimic the look and feel of a refrigerator door (the texture is a little different, but this is a great analogy). The light pebble grain texture pattern is embossed into the aluminum sheets (there is no vinyl whatsoever on this cover!).

The powder coated surface of the cover is a smooth powder coated satin black finish. The top to the canister is slightly textured ABS plastic that is similar in texture to that is embossed into the vinyl top of a car (or virtually identical to a soft vinyl cover.

Smooth implants have a smooth silicone rubber exterior while textured implants have a rough surface usually composed of silicone rubber. Other materials, such as polyurethane foam have been used in the past to create a textured surface, but only silicone is available presently.

Texturing refers to the surface of the breast implant. Textured implants have a rough surface in an attempt to prevent contracture formation (especially when the implants are placed above the muscle). This does not appear to be relevant in the sub-muscular position. Textured implants may be associated with rippling more than smooth implants.

This option is also entirely up to you. If you are getting contoured, textured is recommended so that the implant does not flip or rotate. There are smooth and textured surfaces available on both Mentor and McGhan round implants. Some surgeons prefer textured unders when placing silicone-filled implants under the muscle and smooths for silicone overs. Some prefer smooth salines in any placement, and of course, vice versa for all options.

Any surface onto which a thick media is applied. There are texture paints that have sand or silica mixed in, or actual sculpted areas applied to a wall by trowel to produce a myriad of effects. Textured glass is made by embossing a pattern onto molten glass to give the desired design or texture. The pattern is applied to one side of the glass, but the design can be clearly seen from both sides. Several of our special order door designs are made using textured glass.

In the 1970's capsular contracture was a much bigger problem than it is today. It was found that by adding texture to the shell of the implant the capsule that formed around the implant was much thinner and softer. It was found that the texture caused tissue ingrowth which broke up the collagen that formed around the shell.
