The Jewish community is not immune to the social ills experienced by all Canadians. Unfortunately, woman abuse and child abuse do happen. Our Woman Abuse program helps approximately 300 women each year deal with the effects of emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Click here for more information about woman abuse. Our child protection workers investigate more than 400 allegations of child abuse in the Jewish community each year. Last year, 91 of these allegations were confirmed.

In 2007, there are approximately 2 million people with limb loss in the United States (excluding fingers and toes). There are more than 185,000 new amputations preformed each year in this country. The prevalence rate in 1996 was 4.9 per 1,000 persons. The incidence rate was 46.2 per 100,000 persons with dysvascular disease, 5.86 per 100,000 persons secondary to trauma, 0.35 per 100,000 secondary to malignancy of a bone or joint. The birth prevalence of congenital limb deficiency in 1996 was 25.

Child abuse occur in the place where it is least expected; home, and from adults entrusted for the care of children; parents or guardians. In many cases, if the abuser is not a parent/guardian, s/he is certainly known to the child, especially in the case of sexual abuse.

There are some studies that suggest an increase in affective disorders, including bipolar disorder, in the Jewish community. However, these studies have not been adequately substantiated at this time.

The common types of abuse are: Spousal abuse (domestic violence), psychological abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, and many others. Physical, emotional, sexual and spiritual abuse can all occur. Physical abuse can occur as beatings, electroshock, torture, confinement, forced ingestion of drugs, blood, and feces. Emotional abuse involves trickery, deceit, and blaming the victim. Sadistic sex with children and non-consenting adults and forced perpetration of sexual abuse are forms that sexual abuse can take.

Anger is a normal and healthy emotion and does not cause abuse. Even though abusers can be anger at times, abuse happens when an individual chooses manipulative, threatening or physically violent behavior to gain power and control over another individual. Abusive tactics may occur without any anger evident in the abuser. Some mental illnesses may have challenging or violent behaviors as one of their symptoms.

Under the law, elder abuse can occur in any setting. Most cases arise out of nursing homes which are understaffed, and the staff that exists is poorly trained.

Many experts rate stress as a major factor contributing to abuse and neglect in nursing homes. Nursing home employees are usually paid less than hospital employees and are expected to see more patients in a shorter period of time, both of which can create a very stressful situation. Other contributing factors can be psychological, social, or economic problems of the abuser. The bottom line is none of these factors are excuses for abuse or neglect.

Yes. The NIH researchers are developing a follow-up study in the greater Washington, D.C. Jewish community with an option to be tested and receive individual test results for the three alterations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. All participants will receive counseling as to the risks and benefits of genetic testing. This study will also try to identify risk factors that might interact with BRCA1 and BRCA2 and modify someone's chance of getting breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer.

BSE was first observed in Great Britain in April 1985 and was officially diagnosed in 1986. By June 1990, some 14,000 cases were confirmed (out of an estimated population of 10 million cattle) in Great Britain. Since 1986, more than 185,000 cases of BSE have been confirmed in Great Britain. The epidemic peaked in 1992-93 at almost 1,000 new cases per week. Control measures have since reduced incidence of the disease, and currently fewer than 100 new cases are reported per week.

Fistula occurs when emergency obstetric care is not available to women who develop complications during childbirth. This is why women living in remote rural areas with little access to medical care are at risk. Before the medical advances of the 20th Century, fistula was quite common in Europe and the United States. Today, fistula is almost unheard of in high-income countries, or in countries where obstetric care is widely available.

Sound enters your ears in sound waves. These sound waves hit your eardrum and are converted to pressure changes in the inner ear. This causes special nerves to impulse, which are read by your brain as sound. When these nerves are exposed to a surplus of pressure changes, they may become damaged. You may have noticed that if you listen to loud music for several hours that your ears "ring." This is a Temporary Threshold Shift, or a temporary reduction in hearing.
