X.500 is the most common protocol that is used for Directory Management and there are currently 2 main standards, the 1988 and 1993 standards with the 1993 standard providing a number of advances over the older standard. The Windows NT 5.0 implementation of its Directory Services is derived from the 1993 X.500 standard as described below. The X.500 model uses a hierarchical approach to the objects in the name space with a root at the top of the namespace with children coming off of it.
