There are actually two forms of mapping in Diablo II. The first is the overlay map, and it works just like it did in Diablo, but it's much more necessary now, since there are such enormous outdoor levels, and maze-like dungeon levels, that getting lost is very possible. Diablo II uses a new connection type that was not supported before bnetd version 0.4.23. Later versions support this feature.
