Insure tight contact between the valve face and the valve seat to seal the combustion chamber and provide proper heat transfer from the valve to the cylinder head. While you eliminate the springs, you will still need space between the top of the tire (a good "fist") and the bottom of the deck for suspension travel---regardless of the type of axle used. I have found Torsion axles to run 30-40% more expensive then spring axles. The rubber "fingers" within the axle tube that provide the smooth ride in warm weather, get very hard and brittle in sever cold, causing a stiffer ride and premature failure. To measure this you must install the retainer in the valve spring, then compress the spring until it coil binds. Now measure from the bottom side of the retainer to the bottom of the spring. The easiest way to lessen installed height is to insert a shim in the spring pocket below the valve spring. Another method is to use a different design valve spring retainer. Retainers with a deeper dish will have more installed height; with a shallower dish, less installed height.
