Surgical procedures that take more than an hour carry a risk of blood clot formation (deep vein thrombosis). Being up and about after surgery helps avoid this, as does wearing compression stockings. Whilst in hospital you will be given compression stockings and it is useful to continue wearing them for a few days after your surgery. Contraindications (medical conditions in which compression is not recommended): Ischemia (e.g. advanced arterial disease) of the legs; Uncontrolled congestive heart failure; Untreated septic phlebitis of the leg; and, Phlegmasia coerulea dolens. The stockings should be worn first thing in the morning before one gets out of bed. Some practice is required to wear compression stockings. One may either turn the stockings inside out or apply a small amount of silicone lotion to assist in wearing the stockings. One may also place a rubber glove on the toes and then pass the stockings over them to wear the stockings. A good deal of pulling is required to get the stockings past the ankle. It is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling is present may result in choosing a stocking size that is too large. Many clinics that are unable to see patients earlier in the day will elevate, bandage, or pump the legs for a period of time before measuring in order to reduce any swelling that is present. The wearing time for gradient compression stockings is dependent on both the reason for wearing the compression (indication) and the amount of compression (mmHg). An individual's physician or designee best guides this.
