I think for good reason, based on ethical intuition, that we are more impressed by the kind-hearted soul who nets the flies to let them out of the house alive versus the person hunting them down for certain chemical death with a bottle raid. Even if our great White Suburban hunter of houseflies uses a fly-swatter for ecological reasons, the more admirable course pertains to the person who uses a butterfly net to simply capture the fly for relocation outside.

We have recently began a pilot program to assist local extension agents and private interest groups to participate in acquiring their own phorid "infections." Fire ants are collected in the area to be treated with phorids according to our instructions. Ants are separated from soil at Brackenridge Field Laboratory. We show participants where to place out trays of ants in phorid fly "hot spots." The flies will arrive and attack the fire ant workers.

We have never seen mosquitoes at the Kasbah but they do occur in other parts of Morocco. Flies, especially during the summer months, are very common.

Over the last few years, we have studied about a dozen species of Pseudacteon phorid flies in Brazil and Argentina which attack fire ants in their homeland. With colleagues in those countries and in coordination with colleagues at USDA in Gainesville, FL, we have learned about the life history, behavior, and host specificity of most of these phorid species and have identified several as high priority for application in biological control.

These "vectors" have been shown to carry a variety of disease-causing organisms. Some of these organisms are the cause of Salmonellosis, Shigellosis, Leptrospirosis, and a variety of other food-borne illnesses. The problem with rodent bait in a food facility is that rodents may carry the poisonous bait in their mouths and drop the bait throughout the facility, contaminating food, food contact surfaces, and food related items.

Most of the time you'll be fishing large attractor patterns such as Wulffs, Humpies, Stimulators, Tarantulas, Power Ants, Parachutes, Trudes, Hoppers and so on in sizes 12, 10, 8 and even 6's. For nymphs, try Yuk Bugs (8 & 6's), Girdle Bugs (8 & 6's), Bead-head Prince (14-10's), Pheasant Tail (14 & 12's), and Red Fox Squirrel Tail (14-10's). For streamers, use JJ Specials, Muddlers, Kiwi Muddlers, Zonkers, and Woolly Buggers in size 6 and 4's.

When the hatch is on, match it!!! When it's not ........... Well now .......... The upper river has many of the same insects as all the other freestone rivers up and down the mountains from Alaska to California, however the timing of the hatches will somewhat different.

Life Flight 1 (helicopter) is staffed with a pilot, a flight nurse and a flight paramedic. Life Flight 3 (airplane) is staffed with two pilots, a flight nurse and a flight paramedic. All crew members have received specialized training and participate in rigorous ongoing training.

There are two international airports in Cambodia, in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The Phnom Penh airport was recently renamed from Pochentong Intl Airport to Phnom Penh Intl Airport and the airport in Siem Reap is called Siem Reap-Angkor Intl Airport. For the time being there are only flights from regional locations though there are plans to build a new airport in Siem Reap later this decade that will permit long-haul flights.

Black flies are controlled in our immediate area. The larvae are treated by biological means. There are no black flies here at Fourpeaks. That's the good news. Deer flies (they come first) and mosquitoes (later on) may have to be dealt with. The appearance of these flying nuisances is quite variable. It depends on the weather and other factors. There are often none at all. If there are any, the concentration varies. Bothered by them? Personal bug sprays or creams are effective.

I bought some worms from you back in the Fall. The worms are great, multiplied in great numbers BUT I have a huge fruit fly problem. I tried basically starting over - taking nearly everything out minus worms - and putting them in fresh newspaper bedding with some organic material - the worms survived this but so did the fruit flies! I finally got to Spring time when I could move the worms out to the back porch..

Studies of flies, genus Pseudacteon, that live, reproduce, and thrive on host fire ants in North America can reveal much about details of phorid natural history. Understanding the biology of these temperate-zone phorids could provide important guidance for developing optimum methods for introducing phorids from South America which would attack the pest fire ant species.
