Information about binary distributions of PDL can be found on http://pdl.perl.org . At present there are binary distributions of PDL for Linux (RedHat and Debian), FreeBSD and Windows. During development you'll want to run within a runtime workspace and not use the distributions. However at times, when the distributions need to be tested they can be easily done so with your target platform.

PLANTS contains county-level distributional data for 49 states (all except Maryland), and these are listed in the legend of the distribution map in a species' PLANTS Profile. After selecting a species and viewing its PLANTS Profile, check the distribution map to see if the plant occurs in the state of interest.

Quite a few distributions have been released in the past. Some of them are outdated and should not be used, other are quite new and contain NetBSD as well as some contribution packages. All of those are available on CD-ROM and therefore require access to a CD-ROM drive. The first distribution contains a - today - ways outdated NetBSD V0.9 release on the "Meeting Pearls I" CD-ROM. This distribution should be avoided today, please do not try to mix binaries from this release with newer ones.

Debian developers communicate with other Linux distribution creators in an effort to maintain binary compatibility across Linux distributions. Most commercial Linux products run as well under Debian as they do on the system upon which they were built. Debian GNU/Linux adheres to the Linux Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. However, there is room for interpretation in some of the rules within this standard, so there may be slight differences between a Debian system and other Linux systems.

There are three distributions, the "stable" distribution, the "testing" distribution, and the "unstable" distribution. The "testing" distribution is sometimes 'frozen' (see What about "testing"? How is it 'frozen'?, Section 5.6.1).

In Binary mode a file is copied bit for bit from one machine to the other. Both files (the original and the transferred file) will contain exactly the same sequence of bytes.

The developers make sure that the software builds and works correctly on the platforms available to them; this does not necessarily mean that your platform is one of them.
