Answer: No. Drinking glass and window glass contain lead. This glass cannot be recycled currently. It can be disposed of as garbage. Residents in single-family homes should place such materials in a clearly marked bag or can for the safety of garbage collection crews.

Waste generated in the subways and on subway platforms is handled by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). When NYC started its recycling program, the MTA, in cooperation with the NYC Department of Sanitation, placed recycling containers on a trial basis on the platforms of certain high-traffic stations. They found that riders used recycling containers for both garbage and recyclables, negating the extra effort on everyone’s part.

In the early 1990’s, when recycling was mandated in NYC, the Department of Sanitation tested the practicality of street-corner recycling by placing separate recycling bins on well-trafficked street corners. Place the glass container in a pan of hot water with a trivet underneath the glass to keep it positioned off the bottom of the pan. Place the pan on your stove with the burner set at low to maintain a high water temperature. Don't Let the ?water boil unless you are absolutely sure your glass container can withstand such extreme heat. Please set out recycling bins or toters and garbage cans or toters in a visible location the night before your regular collection day, or by no later than 6:30AM on your collection day. As our area grows, collection times in your neighborhood may change. To help us keep program costs low, please set out recycle bins only when full. On windy days, please place recycling bins singly on the ground rather than stacking. Use a rock or brick to weight down paper bins and prevent wind-blown litter.

The 100-gallon automated containers, at 28.5 inches wide, were designed to fit through gates. We have a limited number of slightly smaller 64-gallon gray and green containers, with a similar footprint, but shorter.
