vB code is a set of tags based on the HTML language that you may already be familiar with. They allow you to add formatting to your messages in the same way as HTML does, but have a simpler syntax and will never break the layout of the pages you are viewing. See the vB Code List here.

When I try to open some dialogs, I get the message "An unsupported operation was attempted", and the dialog is blank

In order to support Chinese pinyin characters, the pages of Quia Web must display in a different font. lt;STYLE> is Font.PLAIN, Font.ITALIC, Font.BOLD or any additive combination (e.g. Font.ITALIC+Font.BOLD). TextArea just uses the corresponding widget of the underlying window system. It will be bounded by the limit imposed in the native window system. In Windows95 TextAreas can hold about 28Kbytes. The native widget allows 32Kb, but there is some overhead which reduces the amount available to the programmer. The limit will likely disappear with JDK 1.2 which dispenses with peer controls.
