Application for a Building Permit is made at the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Permit Application Center at 12055 Government Center Parkway on the 2nd floor. The application is then reviewed for compliance with various building code requirements and to ensure that the nature and location of the proposed construction complies with Zoning Ordinance requirements.
This is obviously the first question one asks, and there is no definitive answer. Most people remodel their homes to create more living space. Others renovate just to update the look of their home, such as a new kitchen or bath, or adding a deck or other exterior alterations. No matter what the reason, you should carefully plan and weigh all options and issues before beginning any remodeling project.

While it is recommended that you check with Dane Co. Zoning and/or our Building Inspector, here are some general guidelines to follow. Any structure added to your property will first require a Dane Co. zoning permit BEFORE you apply for a local permit. This includes decks, garages, pools, garden sheds, etc. You must then apply locally for a building permit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mold
The answer depends upon what is meant by “completely eliminate mold.” To keep a building completely free of mold spores requires very efficient air filtration and is only accomplished in special situations such as hospital operating rooms and manufacturing “clean rooms.” Remember, mold spores are in the outside air virtually all the time and some of them will get inside buildings. However, it is possible to keep mold from growing inside a building.
Fire prevention requires 2 sets of plans, at least one of which must be sealed / signed by a NYS licensed Architect or Engineer. We retain one copy and send one to the Fire Department.
