Can I use ZFS on USB disks?

Solaris Ready USB FAQ
USB 2.0 support for ZFS has been enabled in Solaris 10 Update 2 and Solaris Express. USB 1.1 support for ZFS is only available in Solaris Express now. Do not hot-remove a USB disk with non-replicated ZFS filesystem when I/O operations are going on. See similar questions...

How can I get ZFS?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
Projects are under way to port ZFS to FreeBSD and to Linux (using FUSE). For more information on CDDL, see the licensing FAQ. See similar questions...

Can I use ZFS as my root file system? What about for zones?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
Currently, ZFS file systems cannot be used as a root file system on Solaris 10 releases. However, a small subset of ZFS root and boot support is available in the SX community release for x86 systems. For more information, see ZFS Boot. Please stay tuned for the Solaris 10 ZFS boot schedule. ZFS can be used as a zone root path in the Solaris Express release, but it cannot be patched or upgraded until those tools recognize ZFS file systems. For more information, see the Zones FAQ. What's the Benefits of USB Flash Disks?

Shineway Electronics Co., Ltd.
Light weight and easy to carry: USB flash drives weigh about the same as a car key ?C in fact, some USB flash drives are so lightweight that hypothetically it could be only 8 grams. USB flash drives are about the size of a stick of gum. High Capacity: USB flash drives currently can hold up to two gigs of data ?C that"s over 650 three-minute songs (33 hours) recorded as MP3s or about three times the content of a standard compact disc. Can I use a USB Microphone?

SingSnap | Frequently Asked Questions
No, USB microphones are currently not supported for the following reason: They work independently from the computer sound card where the music is coming from. Because of this, the music and microphone cannot be recorded together. The only option you have would be to record from the USB microphone or the sound card. We are looking at alternate ways of supporting a USB microphone in the near future. See similar questions...

What does ZFS stand for?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
Originally, ZFS was an acronym for "Zettabyte File System." The largest SI prefix we liked was 'zetta' ('yotta' was out of the question). Since ZFS is a 128-bit file system, the name was a reference to the fact that ZFS can store 256 quadrillion zettabytes (where each ZB is 270 bytes). Over time, ZFS gained a lot more features besides 128-bit capacity, such as rock-solid data integrity, easy administration, and a simplified model for managing your data. See similar questions...

Why does ZFS have 128-bit capacity?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
File systems have proven to have a much longer lifetime than most traditional pieces of software, due in part to the fact that the on-disk format is extremely difficult to change. Given the fact that UFS has lasted in its current form (mostly) for nearly 20 years, it's not unreasonable to expect ZFS to last at least 30 years into the future. At this point, Moore's law starts to kick in for storage, and we start to predict that we'll be storing more than 64 bits of data in a single filesystem. See similar questions...

What limits does ZFS have?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
The limitations of ZFS are designed to be so large that they will never be encountered in any practical operation. ZFS can store 16 Exabytes in each storage pool, file system, file, or file attribute. ZFS can store billions of names: files or directories in a directory, file systems in a file system, or snapshots of a file system. ZFS can store trillions of items: files in a file system, file systems, volumes, or snapshots in a pool. See similar questions...

What can I do if ZFS panics on every boot?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
ZFS is designed to survive arbitrary hardware failures through the use of redundancy (mirroring or RAID-Z). Unfortunately, certain failures in non-replicated configurations can cause ZFS to panic when trying to load the pool. This is a bug, and will be fixed in the near future (along with several other nifty features, such as background scrubbing). See similar questions...

Can devices be removed from a ZFS pool?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
You can remove a device from a mirrored ZFS configuration by using the zpool detach command. Removal of a top-level vdev, such as an entire RAID-Z group or a disk in an unmirrored configuration, is not currently supported. This feature is planned for a future release. See similar questions...

Can I split a mirrored ZFS configuration?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
Currently, ZFS does not support the ability to split a mirrored configuration for cloning or backup purposes. The best method for cloning and backups is to use ZFS clone and snapshot features. For information about using ZFS clone and snapshot features, see the ZFS Admin Guide. See RFE 6421958 to recursively send snapshots that will improve the replication process across systems. See similar questions...

Is ZFS supported in a clustered environment?

ZFS FAQ at OpenSolaris.org
SunCluster 3.2 supports a local ZFS file system as highly available (HA) in the Solaris 10 11/06 release. This support allows for live failover between systems, with automatic import of pools between systems. If you use SunCluster 3.2 to configure a local ZFS file system as highly available, review the following caution: Do not add a configured quorum device to a ZFS storage pool. How can I use TrueCrypt on a USB flash drive?

Can I store encrypted volumes on recordable CD disks, CD-RW disks or USB flash disks?

Disk encryption software FAQ
Yes, you can. Create the container file on your hard drive, and burn it onto the CD or write it on the USB flash. More info on how to encrypt USB flash disk, DVD, CD… You do not need to repartition your hard drive. When you create a new disk you are required to give the name of the file where you want to store your secret information in the encrypted form. That's all. So the new disk is actually just one file, not partition. It's much easier to manage a file than a partition. E.g. See similar questions...

How to I use unix formatted ZIP disks?

UT Physics Linux FAQ
The ZIP drives in our lab machines are set up to use the automounter. The automounter will automatically mount the drive for you when you access it, and unmount it when it is not being used. If you want to use Ext2fs (linux) formatted ZIP disks in the lab, make sure you create a filesystem on the disk in the lab before using it by typing: /sbin/mke2fs /dev/zip so that the ZIP disk is formatted with your user permissions. Can I use the program disks on more than one machine?

FAQ
Not legally. Again, the license is good only on a single machine, even if there is no way anyone might use the product on another machine. Hopefully All Topo Maps are reasonably priced and you will purchase a copy for every machine that they are run on. I originally installed a BETA, or Not For Resale version of All Topo Maps (or I installed a friends copy on my machine, but have since purchased my own copy of All Topo Maps). I want to change the old Serial Number to my new Serial Number. See similar questions...

How long can I use the same backup disks?

What size disks or pad should I use?

Sanding disks
If you can only afford one, definitely go with the 2". I would say that most of my bowl, hollow form and faceplate work under 10" is done with a 2" pad. The pads are less expensive and so are the disks. 3" is great for the outsides of bowls and convex shapes and the inside of larger bowls or more gradual curves. Too tight of a curve and the 3" pad will only hit the edges of the disk and not the center. For large work and especially large platters, 3" is good. See similar questions...
