What does DPI (dots per inch) mean?

Digital FAQ - Precision Camera & Video - Austin, Texas
In computers, dots per inch (dpi) is a measure of the sharpness (that is, the density of illuminated points) on a display screen. The dot pitch determines the absolute limit of the possible dots per inch. However, the displayed resolution of pixels (picture elements) that is set up for the display is usually not as fine as the dot pitch.

What does dots per inch (DPI) mean?

Frequently Asked Questions @ EiPrinting (www.checksforless.c...
DPI stands for dots per inch, or the number of dots of ink that fill a linear inch of surface. DPI is used to measure printing resolution -- the higher the dots per inch, the better the resolution and the better the image quality. For example, if an image has a resolution of 300dpi, it means that a square inch of solid color will be filled with about 90,000 (300X300) dots of ink. (Return to Top)

Does it matter what DPI resolution (dots per inch) I used when scanning?

CVISION Technologies
The dpi in a captured image does affect the size of the compressed file. Usually, as the dpi increases so does the file size. Although this is true for regular TIFF-based PDFs, it is not the case for JBIG2-encoded PDFs, where the file size is virtually flat, regardless of the dpi used in scanning. Using JBIG2-encoded PDF format, higher resolution scanning gives you increased image clarity without a noticeable increase in file size.

DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) are confusing. Could you explain the differences?

Stock Photos digital image license fees
Computer screen displays are made up of thousands of individual, small dots, called pixels. One pixel equals one dot on your computer screen. Most computer screens are set to 800 by 600 pixels. This means that an image that is licensed at 800 X 600 pixels will fill your computer screen from side to side and top to bottom if your screen is set to 800 X 600. Printed materials are defined in dots-per-inch. Photographic quality is generally defined as images scanned at 300 dpi.

How do I set the DPI (dots-per-inch) value used by the X server?

XStrikeForce/FAQ - Debian Wiki
let the XFree86 X server calculate the DPI value based on the DisplaySize parameter in its configuration file, XF86Config-4. See the XF86Config-4(5x) manual page for details. The first method is recommended if you already know the DPI value of your monitor and wish to always run it at the same resolution; the second method is the more flexible way, but only available for the XFree86 X server. In each of the files above, remove the -dpi word and the following number.

FAQ Digital Media
Graphics on the web will only display at between 72 and 96 dpi. Graphics produced/saved at higher dpi will generally not display better than 96 dpi on the web and will have unnecessarily large file sizes. Images designed for print-based media, such as brochures or magazine publication, should be created at a higher resolution, generally higher than 600 dpi minimum. Web graphics should not used for printed media.

DPI stands for "dots per inch" a measurement of image quality, how fine or grainy an image will appear. The more dots an image has, the more detailed and clearer the picture will be. For best results, we recommend that your digital pictures be at least 200 dpi when printed.
