Well often you can, but you will rarely be as happy with a universal as with the original. Universal remotes have a very poor track record for working all the features of particular brands. If you have any kind of COMBO unit (TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR) a UNIVERSAL REMOTE WILL NOT WORK. If you have a TV only, it depends. If all you want to do is turn on and off your unit, and maybe adjust the volume or change the channels, then a universal remote might work for you.
