Why is the Pembroke's tail docked?

Because the AKC and Kennel Club (Great Britain) standards require it, along with removal of the dew claws. Contrary to what some people think, tail docking is not a painful process for very young puppies. The lack of a tail certainly does not detract from a Pembroke's expressiveness. The Pem's foxy, intelligent face can be extremely expressive, with a distinct smile when he is happy.

I just bought an 8-week-old puppy and he has a full tail. At what age should I get it docked?

Frequently Asked Questions - Zim Family Cocker Spaniels
It's already too late. The breeder should have had the tail docked at the age of 3-5 days, before the nerves in the tail were fully developed. It can be done very easily and with minimum pain to the dog at that age. Even though your puppy is only a couple of months old now, his tail is already very sensitive. It would require surgery with anesthetic to dock that tail now. Enjoy his unique full tail as it is, rather than putting your dog through surgery.

FAQ
Historically, and I mean a really long time ago, dog tails were docked to protect against injuries during hunting. At the same time, an English law was passed which taxed "non-working" dogs. Rat Terriers are natural hunters, and were (and still are in some cases) commonly used for hunting, thus their tails were historically very commonly docked. The term "NBT" (natural bob-tail) refers to dogs that are born with a bob tail already, and so do not need their tails docked.

Check the styles you passed to Create(). The default value is WS_CHILD|WS_VISIBLE|CBRS_TOP. It is very likely you forgot the CBRS_TOP style (you can also use CBRS_BORDERS_3D - see CControlBar::PreCreateWindow() in MFC sources). Also verify the styles of other docking bars you may have (like toolbars). They must have this style passed to Create() too.

The best way to limit tail inversions is to reef the tail during deployment. This can be accomplished in a number of ways.
