Whenever the body is injured, inflammatory cells and other mechanisms usually cause a release of water-based fluid (edema). When this water-based edema fluid builds-up in a significant amount, it causes what we outwardly see as swelling. In the older conventional liposuction under general anesthesia , this swelling used to persist for several weeks.

Edema could only occur if the pellet is too large for the animal or the underlying muscle was injured during implantation. The pellets are sterile and will not cause infection.

Reduce intake of foods high in salt content, such as bacon, lunchmeat, and potato chips - but DO NOT ELIMINATE SALT COMPLETELY FROM YOUR DIET

Much of the swelling and soreness after liposuction is the result of residual blood tinged anesthetic solution that remains trapped under the skin after liposuction. Red blood cells that have leaked out of blood vessels, and fragments of fatty tissue that escape suction and remain under the skin cause inflammation. Inflammation causes swelling and pain. By encouraging the complete drainage of this blood tinged solution one can minimize soreness and swelling after liposuction.

Patients will notice an improvement in their shape immediately. Bruising may take as long as 2-3 weeks to completely resolve. Swelling improves over this time period as well. Although the results of Liposuction will be seen right away, the final result may take as long as 6 months.

Swelling is very common post-operatively, so you will most likely have swelling to some degree. It is not uncommon for the swelling to migrate downward, to your abdominal area, as well as the groin area. This is nothing to be alarmed about, as the swelling will dissipate within a few days to a few weeks. It's unadvisable to take diuretics without getting permission to do so from your plastic surgeon.

Cystoid macular edema is a well recognized complication associated with RP. It is thought to occur in about fifty percent of RP cases at some stage in the disease. Cystoid macular edema causes a build up of fluid in the macula. The macula is the central portion of the retina responsible for perceiving fine visual detail. Some, but not all, patients who develop cystoid macular edema will experience a reduction of their central vision.

Edema is an observable swelling in certain parts of the body. Edema most commonly occurs in the feet and legs (peripheral edema). The swelling is the result of the accumulation of excess fluid under the skin in the spaces within the tissues that are outside of the blood vessels (interstitial spaces or compartments).

Pulmonary edema is fluid in the alveoli or breathing sacs of the lungs. It can sometimes be heard with a stethoscope as crackles (sounds like rice krispies in milk) when the cat breathes in and out. Sometimes, the fluid is only seen on X-ray. The edema can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic.

Damaged eye blood vessels may leak fluid into the retina. The retina swells (edema) and vision may be affected. Some forms of edema absorb spontaneously and leave no permanent damage. Other forms tend to progress and must be treated with lasers. The purpose of laser treatment is to preserve current visual level. Only 15% of patients report improvement in quality of vision after treatment. Still, treatment is very important because it tends to reduce additional visual loss.

Brain swelling or edema is one of the types of 'what we call secondary, mechanisms of brain damage, which commonly occur following an acquired brain injury. While the primary mechanisms of damage occur immediately at the moment of the injury, secondary mechanisms of damage tend to occur later and may be due to bleeding from damaged blood vessels (hemorrhage), and/or increased pressure within the brain (intracranial pressure) as the brain swells with fluid (edema or hydrocephalus) or blood.
