There are three recordable versions of DVD-ROM: DVD-R, DVD-RAM, and DVD-RW. DVD-R can record data once (sequentally only), while DVD-RAM and DVD-RW can be rewritten hundreds of thousands of times. Final versions of the DVD-R and DVD-RAM specifications were published in August 1997 (see 6.1). DVD-RW will be finalized by the end of 1998. These recordable media are not currently usable for home video recording (see 1.14), though home DVD-RAM recorders will eventually become available.

DVD-RAM uses Zone Constant Linear Velocity (also known as Z-CLV) for reading. It divides the disc into several districts and arranges in a spiral way. Each district contains several sectors. Each sector has its own physical address. Therefore, it uses the same "Data Random Storage" as HDD, which also provides burning repetition. Its burning principle is similar to CD-R / RW, which uses Constant Linear Velocity (also known as CLV). A DVD-R can only be burned once.

Pressed DVDs are what you find at your local video shop. They will work in over 99.9% of DVD players and computer DVD ROM drives. However, due to the large price of glass mastering, we usually only press DVDs for large runs (1000 minimum). These include: For small runs we use recordable DVDs. This category includes single write formats (DVD-R including DVD-R DL, DVD+R) and multi write formats(DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM). Each format has limited compatibility.

Both DVD-R and DVD-RW types generally come in the single-sided, single layer 4.7 GB capacity, which is roughly equal to 120-minutes of standard playing time. You can also now find 9.4 GB double-sided discs entering the market, although there are no players which will automatically play both sides of the disc without ejecting it and turning it over. Eventually, there will be DVD-R discs available that will hold around 20 GB of data, recorded into two layers on each side of the disc.

DVD+R is compatible with most newer DVD players (about 88% of all DVD players). DVD-RW and DVD+RW are essentially the same as above, except with DVD-R and DVD+R media you write to it once, and with DVD-RW and DVD+RW media you can erase and rewrite many times.

DVD+R/+RW is designed from the start to be compatible with existing DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players, both on a physical as well as on a logical level.
