Gynecomastia, which translates to "female breast", is a condition in which firm breast tissue forms in the male, although extra fatty tissue can be present as well. The breasts enlarge and may become tender. This enlargement may be present on one or both sides.

Hormones typically play a large role. Gynecomastia may occur at puberty or as part of the aging process when the activity of the testes begins to decrease. Gynecomastia is most common during puberty. As many as 65% of 14 year old boys have this condition. Ninety percent of these boys will have a complete "recovery" within 18 to 36 months without any treatment.

Dr. Schafer uses Micro-Lipo to remove unwanted breast and glandular tissue. This will also remove some of the fatty tissue that surrounds the ductal tissue. Some men may also be interested in having liposuction in other parts of their bodies, such as around the abdomen. They can often have another area treated on the same day.

In most cases, no treatment is needed. Your doctor will probably want to check the size of your breast tissue every few months. In 90% of teenage boys, gynecomastia goes away in less than 3 years. Sometimes the problem can be solved if you stop taking a medicine that is causing gynecomastia or stop using an illegal drug that is causing the problem. Currently, UAL is an excellent modality for treatment of gynecomastia. It removes the dense fibrous fat of the male breast and contours the area around the central core. Occasionally, resection of the small fibrotic remainder may be needed.

Gynecomastia correction is usually performed using a liposuction technique. Through a small incision at the areolar margin a narrow tube or cannula is introduced and gradual suctioning of the breast tissue is accomplished. In some patients the breast tissue is quite firm and a direct excision of tissue through an incision at the aerolar margin is required. In an occasional patient who has extremely redundant or sagging skin a skin excision is required.

Length of surgery depends on the extent of the individual procedure but typically takes approximately two hours.

Complications may include infection, bleeding, unfavorable scarring, nipple or chest skin numbness, skin or nipple retraction or irregularities, skin looseness as well as asymmetry. Although possible, significant complications are uncommon. If you have "true" gynecomastia Yohimburn will have no direct effect on the hard tissue that has formed under your nipple. It may have an indirect effect that may lead to a reduction of the tissue size. This reduction, which has been noted by some of our customers may be due to the decrease in local aromatase production which is due to the reduction in local fatty stores.
