What are VHS SP, LP, and EP tape speeds?

Movies-2-DVD, FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions. Order, Genera...
Standard Play (SP) is the most common recording speed used for VHS tapes, including rental tapes. You get the best quality audio and video when using the SP tape speed. Video conversions will be best from SP VHS tapes. Long Play (LP) is a seldom used format, and has been removed from many VCRs. Extended Play (EP) or sometimes (XP) is the longest VHS recording speed. You can get up to 360 minutes of recording time on a T-120 video cassette. This saves money but reduces quality. See similar questions...

I just want to purchase tapes, do you dub in SP, EP (SLP) or LP?

Access MST3K FAQ
If you are hooking up two VCR's through a cable to dub a tape, there is always going to be a loss of quality. The loss will be greater when dubbing to EP (SLP) mode. If you are just getting the tapes for viewing and do not plan on trading them, all of my episodes are quite watchable dubbed in EP(SLP) mode. If your purpose of receiving tapes is to trade them with others, I strongly suggest getting them in SP mode. See similar questions...

You mean that 10% of an MD's capacity is wasted in LP mode due to lack of planning!?

Minidisc Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Sony defined a 2 bit field in the original MD specification to indicate non-standard track codings, allowing players to ignore unknown track types (see the MDLP-mode bit in the fragment headers). Unfortunately, non-MDLP units seem rather to ignore the mode bits and will try to play the MDLP audio anyway. See similar questions...

What does the term *SP* mean?

HBO Forum FAQ's
Spoilers. When someone is posting spoilers regarding a book, film, or game -- this should be included (It's not automatic, like the *NM*, so you have to do it yourself). It is a warning to someone regarding the included comments. It is a nice-to-do thing. We like nice-to-do things. :-) See similar questions...

How do I interrupt LP?

Larch Frequently Asked Questions
If you are running LP under Unix, the Unix "quit" character (usually C-g, that's control-g) will interrupt LP's execution. See section 3.6 Can I change the erase character in LP?, for other characters that aid in editing interactive input to LP. What do the terms for measuring book sizes mean?

Frequently Asked Questions for letterpress
Book sizes are based on the practice of folding a large sheet of paper to create several pages. A traditional sized sheet (e.g., 25 x 38) which is folded twice to create four pages yealds a quarto (4to) sized book (measuring 12.5 x 19), a sheet folded three times to create eight pages yields an octavo (8vo) sized book (measuring 9.5 x 12.5), and so on.
