The Foundation Fighting Blindness supports extensive multidisciplinary research programs at a number of major medical centers in the United States and Europe in an effort to find causes, prevention, and possible treatment for retinal degenerative diseases, including RP, Usher syndrome, and macular degeneration.

The Foundation coordinates a national Retina Donor Program to meet the increasing need of researchers to study human retinal tissue. Valuable retinal tissue is obtained after death from persons affected by retinal degenerations or members of their families. By participating in the Retina Donor Program, you can make a personal investment in the search for answers about RP. The Retina Donor Program has already greatly aided research efforts.

The Leopold Center does not own or operate any experimental farms. Research and demonstrations are conducted on university and private farms. The Center believes that its mission is carried out most effectively by diverse programs throughout the state.

CAR conducts addiction research. The Center has a commitment to research with important implications for treatment, prevention and the clinical significance of substance use.

Our studies offer women the chance to learn more about mood disorders, to take advantage of newer treatments that are not widely available, and to be monitored closely during therapy. Depression can affect anyone, and about 10% women become depressed during pregnancy. About 15% of women suffer from postpartum depression.

Besides helping us to better understand depression during pregnancy and postpartum, you will be helping yourself and your baby. You will receive consultation and evaluation from a nationally known expert in the field, Katherine L. Wisner, M.D, M.S. Also, in some of our studies, your baby's development is followed, which will provide you with an abundance of information about your growing baby.

Only the principal investigator and her research staff will know you are involved in the study. Your name will not be placed on any questionnaires or interviews. Most of our assessments are computerized and identify you by a number that is given to you at the beginning of the study. Your consent form and any other identifying forms are kept in a separate, locked file cabinet, which only the research staff only has access to. You decide who you will tell among your family and friends.

The operating expenses of the center are covered by membership dues, donations, activity fees, and the on-going fund-raising activities of the Foundation, such as trips, dances, special dinners, pancake breakfasts, wine & cheese tasting, etc.

Scientists trained in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology are pursuing research that will provide an understanding of the underlying causes of this blinding disease. While a number of theories have been proposed, little is known about the processes responsible for the devastating visual loss associated with Macular Degeneration.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness maintains a computerized National Registry to identify and collect medical and family histories of people in the U.S. with retinal degenerative diseases. Participants who complete a Registry questionnaire may also give permission to The Foundation to release their names to researchers for Foundationapproved studies. Many of the patients who will participate in future clinical studies will be identified in this way. A Registry form is included with this packet.

Yes, the Center owns extensive collections and published materials relating to individuals and families in Texas and the 19th-century South. Nonetheless, the Center does not function primarily as a genealogical research facility. We urge genealogy researchers to visit the Texas State Library's Genealogy Collection (512/463-5463) and the Texas General Land Office, both located approximately one mile from the Center for American History.

CRL holds specialized and rare materials that complement and supplement the collections of its member libraries, including books, journals, newspapers, archives, and microform sets.
