Provided your group policy includes STD, and the employee is eligible for the coverage in all other respects as described by your policy, you need to be aware an insured must experience a loss of income while disabled to qualify for disability benefits. Owners, proprietors, partners, or shareholders or any other person who continues to receive some form of income during the disability are not eligible for STD benefits and should not be enrolled in this coverage.

There is a formal appeal process which you may pursue should your application be denied for short term disability benefits. Please contact the Benefits Divsion directly for information about the appeal process.

Please be prepared to answer some basic questions for Unum such as your last day worked, physician's name, physician's address and physician's telephone number. Unum will mail an information packet with forms included to your home address.

STD provides disability benefits normally beginning after an employee is absent from work for more than 20 hours in a 7-calendar day period, and cannot continue to work. Applicable leave (annual, sick, compensatory, family personal) must be used during the waiting period or LWOP. Disability benefits may be deposited electronically. If you are receiving a combined Workers' Compensation and SERS occupational disability payment, the payment has to be sent by regular mail. If your disability is expected to last more than three months, Direct Deposit is recommended because it is the fastest and most efficient method to receive your monthly payment.

Long-Term Disability ("LTD") benefits are payments to an individual to replace lost income in the event of an injury or sickness resulting in an inability to work. Unlike Workers' Compensation benefits, State Disability benefits, or Social Security Disability Income benefits, LTD benefits are not required by law, nor are they provided by the government.

These two types of insurance policies differ most in terms of the length of the elimination (waiting) period, the length of the maximum benefit period, coordination of the benefits payable under the policy with benefits payable under social insurance programs such as Social Security and Workers' Compensation, and the legal definition of disability in the contract language.

If you can only purchase one type of disability coverage, it would be wise to purchase LTD to cover what could be the greater risk to your financial security. LTD insurance protects the insured against disabilities that may last many years, or even a lifetime, and therefore protects you against potentially catastrophic losses. Statistically, long-term disabilities happen less frequently than short term disabilities.

After you have fulfilled a 7 calendar day waiting period, you may be on approved short-term disability for a maximum of 125 work days.

Short term disability coverage provides wage replacement to individuals who experience wage loss due to a disability. STD coverage lasts for up to one year.

Short-term health insurance is designed to fill temporary gaps in your "permanent" health insurance coverage. These policies are relatively inexpensive and can go into effect very quickly. Most short-term plans last for no more than six months. You can purchase short-term health insurance coverage in one-month increments or in a single payment for one to six months of coverage. All short-term plans exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Most patients will once or twice feel pain or vomit after intake of food. This is in most cases caused by eating too much and too quick. If eating is slow and calm, patients will learn to listen to the signals from the stomach. Eating should be abandoned if the patient feels nauseated, have pain or vomits. Regular vomiting is a sign of warning. This can either be caused by wrong eating behavior or be caused by the outflow of the gastric pouch becoming too narrow.

The university cost shown on the statement is the projected annual cost incurred to provide you with Long-Term Disability insurance through Reliance Standard Life Insurance Company. Benefits are not automatic. Employees must apply and be approved for benefits.

Permanent disability benefits are normally paid when temporary disability (TD) benefits end and your doctor indicates you have some permanent effects from your injury. The claims administrator must begin paying your permanent disability payments within 14 days after TD ends. The claims administrator picks which day to pay you and will continue to make payments every two weeks until a reasonable estimate of your disability amount has been paid.

None. Paid sick leave and STD are two different things. STD has a 14-day waiting period, after the disability occurs, and then pays 60% of your annual salary, on a weekly basis, for up to 26 weeks. The checks come to your home by mail. STD is not automatic, your doctor must supply the information requested, not just the dates that you will be out. Accumulated paid sick leave is used to cover time that you are unable to work due to sickness.
