The Speech Recognition Lab at San Francisco State University has developed a DSP memory expansion board for the NeXT computer that provides the maximum memory supported by the DSP56001 processor. We are now offering this board to those whose are interested in high-performance custom DSP development. The board is a 576KB DSP expansion memory board organized as three non-overlapping 192KB banks: X-data, Y-data and Program.

If you got an AWE with simm-sockets (not the AWE value) then you can expand your RAM memory up to 28 Mb. The AWE has two simm-sockets. To expand your memory you will need two simm-modules of the same kind (30 pin and 80 ns or better, parity or no parity). You can't use only one simm. You can use up to 16 Mb modules but you will only get 28 Mb instead of 32 Mb. This is because the EMU chip can adress 32 Mb, 4Mb ROM (but the AWE only has 1 Mb) and 28 Mb RAM.

Despite Akai's claim that the maximum MPC3000 memory is 16 megabytes (using two 4 MB SIMMs and their proprietary 8 MB memory board), it is actually 32 megabytes, or 380 seconds of sample time. Obviously we don't like memory leaks in LessTif. A couple of tests have been done with commercial memory analysis tools, some of the apps in the tests/ tree help tracking some leaks as well. We believe we're not doing really bad. In fact we did run some simple comparisons with official Motif 1.2.
