IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international test of assessing the level of (British) English proficiency. The test originated from Australia but it is more popular with British Education system. Candidates can take this test at the British Council. Usually it is held twice a month. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of all non-U.S. applicants unless they have obtained a FOUR-YEAR academic degree (bachelor's degree) or advanced degree from an accredited institution of high education in the United States or from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. For admission in the academic year 2008-2009, candidates must provide a score from Fall 2005 or later.

While your GRE score is important, we have no specific cut-off for GRE scores, and consider the GRE score to be just one part of your overall application. IELTS is an examination in English language proficiency prepared by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, in association with the British Council and IDP Australia. This examination is an internationally recognised examination in communicative skills in English in two modules - Academic and General training. All candidates receive an overall result for the exam, as well as individual assessments of each of the four language skills.

Only those students whose first language is not English and whose first degree was not conducted in English are required to provide evidence of English Language proficiency. Certificates must be provided for any English Language qualifications obtained. These should be submitted with the application and remainder of the documentation.

You can send the rest of the application to us, even if you have not taken the TOEFL/IELTS. However we will not process your application without your TOEFL/IELTS score. You should fax us your unofficial scores as soon as you receive them and arrange with the test centre for the official score report to be sent to SMU.

TOEFL, IELTS or CPE (Cambridge EFL) can not be replaced by a certificate of Proficiency in English issued by your university. You are exempted from this requirement only if your native language is English, or if the primary language of instruction at the university where you obtained your previous degree is English (certificate required).

You are highly recommended to take a TOEFL/IELTS test as early as possible because once you are selected to go on exchange, you are required to provide a proof of English proficiency along with your admission application to the host university. If you are unable to attach a proof of English proficiency to the application, you are at your own risk that your admission application to the host university will be rejected.
