Frequently Asked Questions

Are all reverse osmosis systems equally effective?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
Absolutely not. Like all water filters, the effectiveness of a reverse osmosis system depends greatly on the quality of its components - especially its pre-filter cartridges (quantity and quality) and the membrane itself. Lower quality pre-filters will suffer from premature membrane fouling, as well as reduced performance, purified water output, and membrane life.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM AND THE FILTER ONLY SYSTEMS THAT I SEE?

reverse osmosis
A conventional filtration system, such as that in a refrigerator for instance, will give you nice tasting water, but it will not remove the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), such as, SODIUM, MANGANESE, CALCIUM CARBONATE, to name a few, that are present in all municipal tap waters. Only an RO membrane can do this. SEE MORE INFO ON TDS Our ROpure and QT Systems combine filtration with Reverse Osmosis to give you not only the best tasting water, but the safest, purest water you can drink. What is Reverse Osmosis?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
Reverse osmosis, also known as hyperfiltration, is the finest means of filtration available today. It is the most common treatment technology used by premium bottled water companies. Reverse osmosis refers to the process of forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. See similar questions...

Why are reverse osmosis systems always combined with carbon and sediment pre-filters?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
The only major category of contaminants that reverse osmosis is not highly effective in removing (organic compounds) is specifically targeted by activated carbon filters. Pre-filters also prevent the reverse osmosis membrane from being fouled or clogged by sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants, thereby enhancing its effectiveness and lifespan. When will you recommend the use of reverse osmosis (RO) systems?

ECOPURE WATER FILTERS AND DISTILLERS - FAQs (Frequently Aske...
We recommend ROs when people wish to filter out as much impurities as possible from their drinking water supply. RO membranes are rated at 0.0005 micron and can take out practically all impurities in dssolved or ionic form, whereas conventional filters rated at from 0.5 micron to 20 microns can take out some solid sediments and dissolved substances, and are thus much less effective. If you understand how RO works, you'll know carbon filters can NEVER be as good as ROs. See similar questions...

How does Reverse Osmosis work?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
Reverse osmosis uses a membrane that is semi-permeable, allowing pure water to pass through it, while rejecting the contaminants that are too large to pass through the tiny pores in the membrane. See similar questions...

Why is your system more expensive than other reverse osmosis systems?

Frequently Asked Questions about BEV Quality Water — P...
Our systems, which include reverse osmosis as one of three purification methods, offer several significant advantages: We outperform every other residential water treatment product on the market. Other manufacturers boast of contaminant level reduction but we are convinced reduction is not enough. Since many contaminants act as strong allergenic substances, we believe they should be eliminated to the very best possible capacity. See similar questions...

Are reverse osmosis (RO) systems adequate in dealing with bacteria such as E.coli?

ECOPURE WATER FILTERS AND DISTILLERS - FAQs (Frequently Aske...
No, because RO membranes cannot eliminate 100% of contaminants. Also, they will age and degrade gradually. To ensure more effective elimination of bacteria such as E.coli, a UV sterilizer is recommended as a second line of defence. Additional precautions or pre-disinfection are usually needed for lake or well water. See similar questions...

HOW DO THESE REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER SYSTEMS WORK?

reverse osmosis
With these residential reverse osmosis systems, your tap water becomes very pure with substantially reduced dissolved mineral salts. The average household, municipality supplied, tap water usually contains somewhere between 50ppm-450 (Parts Per Million) of dissolved mineral solids, 80ppm being good quality; for tap water; and 450ppm being of lesser quality. The tap water is forced through the RO system with your existing household water pressure, typically somewhere between 40-65psi. See similar questions...

Do all reverse osmosis systems have carbon filters?

Reverse Osmosis - RO Conn
All residential systems have at least 1 carbon filter and 4 stage systems have 2 carbon filters. ROCONN systems also have sediment filters as well to protect the membrane from heavy solids like dirt and rust. It has been my experience with residential systems that an additional carbon filter as a final treatment after the systems post carbon is unnecessary and can restrict the flow of water to your spigot. These extra filters are mainly there for the manufacturers to claim 5 stages. See similar questions...

What kind of warranties do the reverse osmosis systems have?

Doodlebug Pump -- FAQ
All our units have at least a one-year warranty on the components. The manufacturer will replace any defect arising in any of the parts within one year from the date of purchase. Labor for installation is not covered and there is no liability assumed by any of the companies for damage due to water leakage. This is the "standard" in the industry. See similar questions...

What is reverse osmosis or deionization that some growers use?

PAPHIOPEDILUM: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
These are just processes that remove most of the dissolved minerals from water. Many orchid growers with poor quality water will use one or the other to produce high quality pure water for use. To repeat the warning above for pure water users, you must use a complete fertilizer including calcium and magnesium, and be careful of the pH after adding the fertilizer. For more details see "Water Quality Issues for Slipper Orchid Growers". See similar questions...

How often does the reverse osmosis membrane need to be replaced?

Water Filters, Purifiers, and Purification FAQ
With proper maintenance of your sediment and activated carbon pre-filters, your reverse osmosis membrane should last 2-3 years. See similar questions...

Why water from reverse osmosis systems are not encouraged for consumption?

Singapore Longsint Pte Ltd
For industrial use, such as washing of machines, boilers and for cooling towers of commercial air conditioning systems, also in some professions such as fire fighting bureaus, the water using the reverse osmosis system in these cases can be recycled and reused which is beneficial for the environment; Reverse osmosis water is suitable for skin care use, healing of wounds and other disinfection purposes.
